Built with cheap plastic gears July 13, 2009 JP 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Bought this thing two years ago, I trim all my brushes, shrubs, and hedges once a year (so this thing has seen little use). Yesterday, it stopped working, sounds like a plastic gear inside has stripped out. Hopefully, I can disassemble and find a replacement part. If not, I'll never purchase another B&D product. It's time for them to wake up and stop building crap...especially for the price I paid! Bottom line: if you have more than 2 bushes to trim, don't expect this thing to last more than a few seasons.

It's so nice to buy something that's really worth the price asked for it. This is one of those things. I have a large row of upright yews that had gone three years without a trim and which were now seriously overgrown. 120' long, 7'-8' high, 5'-6' wide... not a fun project. The old 13" hedge trimmer was clearly not up to the task, so I went shopping for the biggest baddest trimmer I could find. This was it. And it did NOT disappoint! The motor is powerful and smooth. It can run nonstop without getting the least bit warm thanks to good cooling. The 24" blade slices like the proverbial hot knife through warm butter resulting in a cascade of branches falling to the ground, with virtually no effort, plus, it's long enough to reach to the center of tall/high bushes. Not only that, it's not a lot heavier than smaller less powerful trimmers, so you can go for hours without getting too tired to hold it up. There's very little vibration, too. The handles are well-placed for either-handed operation, as well as upside-down use.
Unlike smaller, less powerful trimmers, the blade pitch on this one will allow branches well over 1/2" dia to enter to be cut. They do, too. and they're cut easily. It barely slows down. That's some serious cutting power. Naturally, that means you have to be VERY careful with this, especially when the trigger lock is on because it would have absolutely no trouble slicing through your extension or through a finger.
I have four minor criticisms of it, none of which is a show-stopper. One is that it's pretty noisy but ear plugs will deal with that. The second concerns the placement of the trigger and the operation with the trigger lock engaged. Basically, with normal handling, the trigger is too easy to touch which disengages the lock. You can hold it in a way to avoid this, but it's a little artificial and results in some additional stress and fatigue. But you might get used to it as I eventually did. I'd like a positive lock on the pigtail plug into which you plug the extension cord receptacle. It's WAY too easy to pull on the cord and lose power. You can tie the extension into a knot with the pigtail, but you shouldn't have to do that. Finally, that great cooling of the motor comes with a price -- there's a powerful fan in there that blows quite a lot of air through the motor. That's a good thing, except that the exhaust air often blows in the user's face, carrying with it whatever debris that happens to be falling at the time. I know I know. Wear goggles. Okay. That's my advice. Wear goggles. If you don't mind the heat and sweat....
All things considered, I'm completely satisfied and can highly recommend this equipment.
Shrubs Fear Me July 1, 2009 PenMangler (alabama, US of A) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
this is the third hedge hog I've owned and the largest. I've had smaller sets, one a 18 inch, the other smaller. The 18 inch has a tendency to get very hot and starts cutting out as if the plug is coming loose and not making a good contact. It doesn't burn you hands or anything like that, unless you stick your finger on the hot part...Duh. The smaller ones vibrate terribly.
This 24 inch is a shrub killer. I have cut up to 3/4 inch limbs and it hogged right through it. I cut all my heavy hedges back to the wood. I was going to get my chainsaw after them, but I didn't want to butcher them up. So, I deployed this animal. It cut down to the heavy wood as if cutting a birthday cake. It did not chew the limbs, but makes clean cuts. I had about 20 feet of mature, heavy-limbed boxwoods, now I have about 20 feet of smaller woody shrubs, ready to fill back into a reasonable size. This hog did not overheat, btw its 94 degrees today. It held its edge, didn't slow down due to dulling. Does not vibrate your hands. It shows its small 3.3 amp motor strength when it stalls on a 3/4 limb. But only if you jam it; if you let it just eat through, it cuts like a charm. I recommend this hedge hog.

I had a Weed Eater gas powered hedge trimmer. To say it was a piece of crap would be to kind. (See my review)
This Black & Decker HH2450 works great. It is about half the weight of the Weed Eater. It is much quieter, (the Weed Eater screamed like the last car in the Indy 500.) With the Black & Decker there is no vibration. It is almost like it is running in slow motion compared to the Weed Eater. I don't mean that in a negative way. It's just that smooth! The longer blade helps quite a bit too.
Just keep your eye on where the cord is at all times.

I cannot believe how well this hedge trimmer works. We had a Black&Decker hedge trimmer that lasted over 20 years. It finally gave out, then I purchased this one after reading all the reviews. Also my husband only lets me buy whatever is rated well on Consumer Reports. I am the one that does the trimming. I used it within minutes of the UPS guy delivering it. I could not believe how fast I was done. With the old 13 inch trimmer, it took meat least an hour and my back started to hurt. With this one it took about 15 minutes and I could not believe I was done. It was so fast, I had to watch that I did not cut too much because it was so easy.
I don't understand the problem people are having with the clip that keeps it on, you just have to pay attention and it works fine. I am a woman of 55 and I just love it. I am not easily impressed, but this one I am happy I bought.
