Great Tool, Great Reach July 27, 2010 James H. Agans (Maryland) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was originally thinking of going with a 2 cycle gas powered trimmer, but several things pointed me to this unit.
1. Weight. The weight of all of the gas trimmers I looked at was prohibitively heavy. This B&D trimmer is nice and light, which, coupled with the D handle, makes it very easy to handle for cutting at all angles. I would not have this ability with a heavy gas trimmer, which would have fatigued me in short order.
2. I am using this for Home use. I have just over an acre of property, and I purchased a small B&D Inverter which converts DC to AC power and produces about 3.8 amps of AC Power. I can clamp my inverter onto the battery of my tractor with the alligator clips provided, and a 50 foot cord is all I need to go anywhere.
3. Hedge trimmers are tools that generally see only occasionally use. The gasoline available today, which includes ethanol, clogs carburetors very fast leaving a sugar based resin. Put this stuff in a carburetor with jets the size of a blonde hair, and let it set for a couple of months. When you go to use it again your carb will be useless.
4. This tool has much better reach than a gas model owing to its design and light weight. It is so light that you ca extend your arm with it for short periods of time. Try doing this with a gas model. If you are the Hulk, or Rocky, Maybe.............
5. One reviewer said they used this machine for several seasons and it failed in the third year. I wonder if they lubed the blades? When you cut branches, you get sap of some kind, which is again sugar based, you know, like gum. I wonder if her blades were all gummed up? You need to clean and lube blades that rub together. I would have thought this to be common sense, but as I hear more and more frequently, common sense ain't all that common anymore.
6. I still have the original B&D electric Trimmer that I bought about 24 years ago and it still runs fine, I just needed one with more reach.
The bottom line is that this is a good machine that handles very well, has very good reach, and is light enough to use for extended periods without your arms falling off. Couple it with a properly sized inverter and you can easily go remote for half the price of a gas job.

Iwas all set to purchase a gas hedge trimmer. Stihl or Echo seemed to be the best.Im 69 years old and after trying the Echo trimmer once at home ,at 11 lbs I knew it would be too heavy for extended use. then my daughter said to try a Black&Decker trimmer. all i can say is WOW this thing really works great! Idid all our hedges in record time and had fun doing it. buy it and you will be glad that you did . CAUTION! when using think CORD! EVERY SECOND! its no fun when you slice through the electrical cord.

Wow. What a difference over my old little trimmer. This makes the task of trimming bushes fast, easy, and fun.
Lean and mean, does the job July 23, 2010 Ron M 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This trimmer was every bit as good as I had hoped. I don't know if that comes from the fact that this trimmer is better or because he was able to finish the job faster than before, thus less time holding the trimmer. I am impressed! We bought this trimmer for a large row of privet hedges around our yard. Trimming this has always been a dreaded chore but not so much anymore! The 24 in size is great and allows us to trim the top in one pass instead of two. As the hedge has grown larger and older, some of the thicker pieces have been impossible to trim with our old trimmer but this one handled it with no problem. I also noticed that my hands felt less "shaky" after using this trimmer.

This trimmer came with the bar bent in shipping but it was not too hard to straighten it back out. The box does not really protect it well. As far as performance, it is relatively light and fast for trimming smaller branches. It is supposed to trim up to three quarters of an inch branches but I think that is a little optomistic. Stick to the smaller branches and it works well.
