| Customer Reviews: Use it Correctly!! August 2, 2010 Mike jarnagin (ALAMOGORDO, NM, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Reading a variety of reviews on this item made me realize that most if not all of the negative reviews were likely the result of misuse of the item. If people were to read the specs, it does state a log size limit of under 7" diameter. Now, I've been using it to split 10-14" rounds, and have had no problems at all. The secret seems to be in simply beginning the split with the shorter stroke lever, until the grain splits... then move on to the long stroke. There is never any appreciable pressure needed on the levers. It would be easy to reinforce the levers, if desired, but used correctly I don't see a reason. This is a great unit for halfing rounds... then finishing off the quartering or kindling with a maul (faster). Used correctly this is a great unit. (PS: there is a $20 discount coupon in AARP magazine right now!)
Disappointing July 20, 2010 Judith Getzinger 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This item was purchased for a father's day gift. It arrived a week after which was ok. but then broke in less than a month. The handles are just tubes and snapped off where they were attached.
