McLane 101 Edger August 20, 2010 FL-Homeowner The edger was fairly easy to assemble, took 20 minutes or so. There was no oil for the engine included in the box. The location of
the oil fill cap was a little tight and hard to get my hand in there. Once it was assembled, oil and gas added, the engine
started right up and ran well. It seems to be well built, and has grease fittings on the shafts. It cuts well and has plenty
of power. The plastic piece on the throttle lever is cheaply made, and fell off the first time that I used the edger. The hole in
the plastic is too big to stay on the lever. Will have to figure out something to fix this. Also, there is no guide on the bottom of the blade housing like my last edger had. This means that you have to be very aware of the blade position, as it will contact the sidewalk or driveway easily. The cotter pins that came with the edger to hold the blade height adjustment shaft on were too small, and luckily, I had some larger ones in the garage. Aside from a few minor things that need to be addressed by the manufacturer, this edger works well, and should last me many years.
Great edger August 17, 2010 Robert Chapman After some minor difficulty with assembly this machine works really well. It is very well constructed with sturdy material - very little plastic. Some reviews were critical of the throttle linkage but it now is all metal and works well. Engine starts easily and the machine is easy to guide as it edges. Depth of cut for the edger is easy to adjust and control. A very nice machine which looks like it will last a long time.
Good but not Great. July 21, 2010 GRJ (Puyallup, WA USA) For roughly 20 years I used a Sears edger which was quite good but finally gave up the ghost, as we say. However, based on the negative reviews at this site, I decided not to buy another Sears edger at this time.
I decided on the McLane edger because of the positive recommendations of many reviewers at this site, although I must say that I thought some of the negative reviews seemed unnecessarily extreme. I also thought that the price (roughly $310) was reasonable given the price of comparable models.
By the way, I purchased it for home use; I am not a professional landscaper.
All things considered, the edger (which I have now used three times) performs reasonably well once you get used to its quirks.
As was stated by W. Nowell in his review, the throttle lever on the handle is a complete joke. I don't know how anyone could design something so flimsy. Before I ever started the engine, I was just moving the throttle lever back & forth to see how it worked and it broke - completely useless! I decided not to mess with it trying to fix it because you can adjust the throttle directly on the engine; but why make something so junky?
The edger is relatively easy to put together. The problem is with operating it once it is assembled. There are no clear directions on how to use the choke and other engine adjustments (at least I didn't receive any such directions) so you have to figure it out by trial and error, which is a pain. What's more, there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to how the choke and gas shut-off work, that is, the adjustment positions.
A negative I never had with the Sears edger is that the blade guard tends to get clogged too easily with debris. The old blade guard from Sears was plastic; this one is metal, although I don't know why that would make a difference. I would assume the dimensions of the blade guard would affect clogging more than what it is made of.
In addition, I must also say that I think I would prefer a three winged blade to the two.
Once I got all the quirks figured out, the edger has performed reasonably well. It is powerful enough for the tasks for which I need it.
Given the negatives I have shared, I still would have given the edger three and half stars if I could (but you can't give half stars). It doesn't deserve four stars but it's better than three.
Who knows, it is still in the box July 12, 2010 unhappy It was my own fault because I was in a hurry and did not read the "This product cannot be returned". It was to be a gift and the person already had one. I should not be mad at Amazon but I am because I have spent $330 and it is still in the box. Others have highly recommeded this edger and that is why I ordered it in the first place. Anyone interested in purchasing at a discount?McLane 101 9-Inch Gas Powered Lawn Edger
McLane 9" edger July 6, 2010 Jimmy after reading the reviews I was somewhat reluctant to order this product--HOWEVER after receiving the edger it took very little to assemble. I filled the crankcase with oil and the gas tank with gas. ONE short easy pull and the edger started. I edged all 7oo feet of my yard with no problems at all. It could have only been easier if the machine had started it'self and done the work without me being there..GREAT Machine--- so far
